Fret Fabrics X Sunnylands Estate

Located in Rancho Mirage, California, Sunnylands is a renowned midcentury modern estate celebrated for its architectural significance, cultural heritage, and role in hosting world leaders and historic gatherings. Originally designed in the 1960s by architect A. Quincy Jones with the interiors and custom furniture designed by William Haines & Ted Graber. Sunnylands stands as an enduring symbol of refined design and thoughtful stewardship. Fret Fabrics' ongoing work supports the estate's mission to preserve its interiors with authenticity and precision allowing its legacy to endure for future generations.

For years, Fret Fabrics has worked quietly and carefully alongside the Sunnylands estate, restoring and redressing key pieces of William Haines furniture throughout the property. Each project begins with close study-of form, fabric, pattern, and provenance-allowing every piece to be returned to its original spirit. Through this process FRET revives not only structure and surface, but the subtle dialogue between color texture, and time that defines the estate's interiors.

Fret recently completed the restoration of the Atrium suite, which includes a sofa, two chaises, and four armchairs. Fret’s work brought renewed life to these pieces while honoring their original design language. Subtle in gesture and exacting in execution, the work reflects Fret's ongoing commitment to preservation that is both precise and deeply considered.

Over time, Fret Fabrics has contributed to the restoration of numerous rooms throughout the Sunnylands estate, carefully attending to a wide range of furnishings and interior details. Each project reflects a consistent dedication to historical accuracy, material integrity, and quiet craftsmanship.

Across these spaces, Fret’s work reveals a layered process—one rooted in research, patience, and respect for the original design. Photographs documenting this restoration process can be viewed below.
